About us

The Shed Thrift is a Not For Profit created and driven to enrich the lives of animals and those who share that compassion. This is accomplished with the unique pairing of pet owners and their veterinarians. We work with local veterinarians developing a program designed to assist the pet owner. A generic scenario proceeds as follows:

A pet owner visits their vet and is met with some disappointing news about how life saving surgery is needed or possibly lifelong medication and the pet owner cannot afford it. We are especially empathetic to people on a fixed income as the elderly population relies on their pets to alleviate loneliness and provide comfort.

They are told that the only option would be to put the pet down. The vet can then say, “I may have a solution for you as this office has partnered with a local nonprofit called The Shed Trift”

The Shed steps in under specific circumstances and guidelines designating you and your pet as a good fit thus making you eligible as a recipient of the needed funds.

Co Founder and President

Jean Piazza

Jean worked as the ReStore Manager for Habitat for Humanity for nearly five years; managing two different locations. Jean’s creative design expertise coupled with articulate organizational skills as well as her commitment for building team energy lays the foundation for success across the board. Whether behind the scenes procuring or up-front spotlighting customer service, no client service ingredient gets overlooked. An early childhood upbringing surrounded by antiques and hand me downs paved the way for an appreciation of history and a keen sense of the earth’s limited resources; hence the importance of “waste not, want not”. Co Founder and Vice President

Evan Kaplan

Evan volunteered at Habitat alongside Jean. Together, it quickly became obvious how easily these two talents meshed. A lifelong treasure hunter and jack-of-all-trades, Evan is beyond gifted; whether he is installing cameras, building bookshelves or hanging chandeliers, no outside tradesmen are needed. Evan has been engaged in his own dog walking business for ten years. They have a shared compassion for animal advocacy.

Evan has an MBA from Nova Southeastern University

Manager

Nancy Hitman

Nancy ensures transparency and accountability in managing volunteers and the store inventory. She has her hands on every facet of the operation. Of all Nancy contributes to The Shed Thrift, by far it is her dog Ruby that steals the show.

Nancy has a BFA in Fine Arts and Art History from University of Colorado and currently is an artist in Southern Florida.

Director of Opertions

Ruby is the store mascot. Every dog is special (as every dog owner will attest) but Ruby has some very unique qualities; namely she has Nancy’s personality.

Ruby has a PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in Cuteness from Pawvard University
